The dust is settling after 54 hours of entrepreneurial fun, learning and more than a little madness with New Zealand’s first education themed Startup Weekend. After thoughtful deliberations from our esteemed judges we have a winner for Startup Weekend Wellington. It’s team Banqer!
Banqer is a classroom learning platform that helps kids improve their financial literacy. The founders included recent graduates of Enspiral’s Dev Academy, a programme for upskilling people into developer roles within the ICT industry. The team looked very studious throughout the weekend and gave a slick final pitch that included a credible business model.
Other teams also gained muchos kudos, with enthusiastic commendations dished out to Idea Volt, School Comms, Study Ninja and Monkey C# Monkey Do.
Judging the pitches was Michael Elwood-Smith of Creative HQ and Akina Foundation, Vicky Compton of Ministry of Primary Industries, Terry Shubkin of Young Enterprise Trust, and Steve Maharey the Vice-Chancellor of (our hosts and sponsor) Massey University.
Whilst Banqer took out the top spot, in reality everyone who participated is a winner. Startup Weekend provides a simple methodology for ideation, validation and execution that sets future entrepreneurs on the right path. Friendships and business connections frequently endure well beyond the weekend itself. Please remember to support our sponsors and thanks to everyone who contributed or participated.
The next New Zealand Startup Weekend will be help in Palmerston North starting 12th September.
